A legendary dancer from England. Her real name was Maria Delores Gilbert. She was born in Limerick, Ireland. She traveled around Europe pretending to be the daughter of a Roma (formerly called a Gypsy) from Granada, and danced in the repertoire of the famous romantic ballet dancer of the time, Fanny Elssler's "Tarantula". She performed in Munich in 1846 and became the mistress of Ludwig I of Bavaria (reigned 1825-48). She was attacked by the people for her interference in politics, and fled Bavaria, which led to Ludwig's abdication. She later caused a sword fight in Paris, but in her later years she lived in New York and devoted herself to welfare work. The French film "Women Make History" (1956) is based on Montez.
