An old town in the northern part of the Izu Peninsula, Tagata County, Shizuoka Prefecture. The town developed in the Kano River basin, and is served by the Izu-Hakone Railway. The town is agricultural, and is famous as a good place for sweetfish fishing. There are breweries and computer factories. It has also developed as a tourist destination, centering on Ohito Onsen (simple hot spring, 57-66°C), which first gushed forth in 1949. In April 2005, it merged with Izunagaoka Town and Nirayama Town in Tagata County to become a city, Izunokuni City. Area: 43.56 km2 . Population: 15,597 (2003). 静岡県田方(たがた)郡,伊豆半島北部の旧町。狩野(かの)川流域に市街が発達,伊豆箱根鉄道が通じる。農業を営み,アユ釣りの適地として有名。醸造,計算機の工場がある。1949年湧出の大仁温泉(単純泉,57〜66℃)を中心に観光地としても発展。2005年4月田方郡伊豆長岡町,韮山町と合併し市制,伊豆の国市となる。43.56km2。1万5597人(2003)。
