Xiao Army

Chinese author. His real name was Liu Honglin. Xiao Jun was his pen name, and he was also known as Saburo and Tian Jun. He was born in Liaoning Province. After the Manchurian Incident, he began his career as a writer, and in 1934 he moved to Shanghai with the manuscript of "August Village," a novella about the anti-Japanese armed struggle of farmers in the northeast. He was recognized by Lu Xun, and the following year, with Lu Xun's assistance, he published the book, attracting much attention. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, he moved to Yan'an, and after the victory, he edited the "Cultural Newspaper" in Harbin, but was criticized by the Chinese Communist Party in 1948 for publishing anti-Soviet and anti-people articles. He made a comeback in the 1950s with the novels The Mines of May (1954) and Ages of Past (1957), but the former was again criticized as a reactionary novel that slandered the party leadership, and he was treated coldly as an anti-party element, but his reputation was rehabilitated in 1979. Ages of Past, his greatest work, is a masterpiece that displayed the true value of this writer, who excelled in portraying the wild people rooted in the northern climate.

中国の作家。本名劉鴻霖(りゅうこうりん)。蕭軍は筆名、また三郎、田軍などとも。遼寧(りょうねい／リヤオニン)省出身。満州事変後作家生活に入り、東北の農民の抗日武装闘争を描いた中編『八月の村』の原稿をもって1934年上海(シャンハイ)に移り、魯迅(ろじん／ルーシュン)に認められ、翌年魯迅の援助を得て出版、注目を集めた。日中戦争時代延安に入り、戦勝後ハルビンで『文化報』を編集したが、反ソ・反人民的文章を掲載したとされ、48年中国共産党の批判を受けた。以後50年代に一度復活、長編『五月の鉱山』（1954）、『過去の年代』（1957）などを発表したが、前者はふたたび党の指導を誹謗(ひぼう)した反動小説と批判されるなど、反党分子として冷遇されてきたが、79年名誉回復した。畢生(ひっせい)の大作『過去の年代』は、北方の風土に根ざした野性味あふれる民衆像を得意とするこの作家の真価を発揮した代表作である。
