...After the fall of Khrushchev in 1964, the Political Journal, which compiled underground information, and the Chronicle of Current Affairs, edited by Yakir, were continuously published, and became a base for critics of the regime. In some cases, the materials were taken out of the country, or, as in the case of Sinyavsky's work, they were published abroad under pseudonyms, which is called tamizdat (tam means overseas). The authorities have been very strict in their repression, and many of the editors and contributors have been imprisoned or placed in psychiatric hospitals, but the underground publishing movement continues to thrive. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "tamizdat" are listed below.
