...The star catalog in Ptolemy's Almagest was a conversion of Hipparchus' observations of the positions of 1,022 stars from around the 2nd century BCE into coordinates in 138 AD, and many star catalogs up until the Middle Ages were based on this original source and simply converted the coordinates. Ulugh Beg of the Timurid dynasty built an observatory in Samarkand in 1420, and the results of observations there were compiled in Ulugh Beg's Astronomical Tables (1437). The format of the star catalog is the same as Ptolemy's, and 1,018 stars are recorded. ...
