Yugoslav geographer. Professor at the University of Belgrade from 1893, and president of the Serbian Academy of Sciences. He started out as a physical geographer, but after facing the reality of conflict between the Balkan peoples in the Balkan Wars and World War I, he proposed Balkanology as a new form of regional study, and established human geography, making full use of historical and ethnological methods. His most famous work is The Balkan Peninsula (Paris, 1918), based on lectures given at the Sorbonne, in which he divided the Balkan Peninsula into several regions based on the complex relationship between nature and history.

ユーゴスラビアの地理学者。1893年以後ベオグラード大学教授，セルビア科学アカデミー会長。自然地理学者として出発したが，バルカン戦争と第1次世界大戦でバルカンの諸民族同士が相戦うという現実に直面して，新たな地域研究としてのバルカン学を提唱し，また歴史的･民族学的方法を駆使した人文地理学を確立した。有名な著書には，ソルボンヌ大学での講義をもとにした《バルカン半島》(パリ，1918)があり，同書で自然と歴史との複合関係に基づいてバルカン半島を数個の地域に分類した。
