A general term for the Hawea (Kentia) genus of palms. Two species, H. belmoreana and H. forsteriana, are distributed on Lord Howe Island, east of Australia. The Japanese name Kentia palm comes from the fact that the genus Kentia was once used. Both species are monoecious and have a single trunk. Kentia palms grow to a height of 7-8m, with the base of the trunk swollen. Leaf scars remain in a circular shape on the trunk. The pinnate leaves, 3-5m long, curve gracefully. Kentia palms grow to a height of over 12m, with the base of the trunk not swollen. The pinnate leaves are about 3m long and do not droop. The leaflets are wider than those of Kentia palms. Both species are sold in pots. They should be grown in partial shade, as strong light will cause leaf burn. In winter, they should be kept indoors at a minimum temperature of 7°C.

ヤシ科ハウエア (ケンチャヤシ) 属の総称で，オーストラリア東岸のロードハウ島に，ケンチャヤシ H.belmoreanaとヒロハケンチャヤシ H.forsterianaの2種が分布する。かつてケンティア Kentiaの属名が用いられたことから，ケンチャヤシの和名がある。いずれも単幹で雌雄同株。ケンチャヤシは高さ7～8mになり，幹の基部が肥大する。幹に葉痕が環状に残る。長さ3～5mの羽状葉は，優美にしなる。ヒロハケンチャヤシは高さ 12m以上になり，幹の基部は肥大しない。羽状葉は長さ約 3mで，ほとんど垂れ下がらない。小葉の幅はケンチャヤシより広い。2種とも鉢栽培されたものが流通する。強光を当てると葉焼けを起すので，半日陰で育てる。冬期は室内で，最低7℃以上に保つ。
