Exoskeleton

Japanese:
Exoskeleton
As opposed to an internal skeleton. It refers to the hard shell that covers the outside of the body of mollusks and arthropods. The shell of a mollusk is calcium carbonate secreted from the mantle membrane, while the shell of an arthropod is a cuticle secreted from epithelial cells, and both have in common the fact that they do not contain cells. In addition to supporting the body and functioning as an attachment point for muscles, the exoskeleton also serves to protect against predators. Many arthropods have many joints in their exoskeleton and are highly mobile. However, the exoskeleton is a constraint on growth, so they need to molt.
