Sweet limpet

Sweet limpet

A small, cap-shaped shell of the family Limnopodidae of the class Gastropoda of the phylum Mollusca. It is found widely from southern Hokkaido southward through the western Pacific and Indian Ocean regions, attaching to rocky shores in the upper intertidal zone. Some reach a shell length of 40 mm, a diameter of 30 mm, and a shell height of 10 mm, but most are about half that size. When viewed from above, it usually has seven strong radial ribs protruding from it, forming a star shape, hence the Japanese name, which resembles the webbed feet of a bird. The shell surface is black-blue, the inside is milky white, and the top is black-brown. The soft body's feet are yellowish-white. It has a fixed habitat, from which it emerges at low tide to hunt for food, and has a homing habit of returning to its original location. The type found in tropical regions south of Okinawa has a thick shell and a pale color, so it is sometimes called the Ryukyu noashigai (Ryukyu foot shell) and is distinguished from the inland type.
