This is an early Irish-Saxon large-scale illuminated gospel manuscript. It was produced in the late 7th century. It was passed down to the monastery founded by the Irish monk Aidan on Lindisfarne Island, known as the Holy Island, off the east coast of Northumberland in central England, until the end of the 8th century. It measures 34 cm x 25 cm and has 659 leaves. According to a colophon added by Aldred at the end of the 10th century, the text was written by the abbot Eadfrith (r. 698-721), who is also said to have done the decorations.
