Kanbata

Japanese: かんばた
Kanbata

…Therefore, some people think that the most simple plain twill is called ki. On the other hand, in Japan, the Wamyōshō states that it is a thin fabric similar to brocade, and that it is called kanbata. Therefore, the relatively simple brocades among the ancient textiles, such as the Hiraji Ukimon Nishiki, one of the treasures donated to Hōryū-ji Temple, and the narrow Danmon Nishiki (weft stripe fabric) in the Shosoin Repository, are considered to be kanbata. The interpretation of ki as a string-like fabric comes from the fact that the Todai-ji Donations Book contains a scroll with the word ki obi, and the Nihon Shoki also contains the word ki obi in the entry for April, 4th year of the reign of Jitō, regarding the court dress. …

From [Sanada Ori]

...A flat, thick, narrow woven fabric. It is made of cotton, silk, linen, and nylon. It is said to be the successor to the ancient woven fabric "kanhata" and has been used as a sash. The origin of the name is said to be from the Tensho period (1573-92), when Sanada Masayuki wrapped the hilt of his sword with this fabric, but this is uncertain. It is also said to be an abbreviation of "sanahata" (narrow weave). It has a flat warp ridge structure or twill weave with tightly packed warp threads, and has stripes. It comes in a variety of widths from 1.5 to 10 cm, and the thin ones are called Sanada himo and are mainly used for strings for scrolls and wooden boxes. ...
