It is a Finno-Ugric language of the Uralic language family, and is spoken in the Republic of Udmurtia, located on the west bank of the Kama River, a tributary of the eastern Volga River in Russia. It has a speaker population of about 747,000. It calls itself Udmurt, but has also been called Votyak. Together with Komi, it forms the Permian language. Phonetically, Udmurt has five vowels [i, e, a, o, u], as well as the central vowels ï [ɨ] and ë [ə]. Morphologically, nouns change into 15 cases and have possessive endings.
