A leader of the independence movement during the Puritan Revolution in England. Born into a Puritan family in Nottinghamshire. As soon as the civil war began, he joined the parliamentary army and gained the trust of Oliver Cromwell, becoming his son-in-law in 1646. After the end of the First Civil War, he represented the military's political position in place of Cromwell, between the King, the Presbyterians, and the Levellers. He is particularly famous for the Putney Debate of 1647, which he held with the radical Levellers, who had presented a political reform proposal called the People's Agreement, regarding the fundamental issues of the constitution. He later participated in an expedition to Ireland with Cromwell, and played an active role as his representative after Cromwell's return in 1650, but died of illness the following year in 1651.
