A city in central Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. It is located at the southern foot of the Sayama Hills and is the birthplace of the Murayama clan, one of the seven clans of Musashi. It was once a farming village whose main industries were sericulture and Sayama tea cultivation, and Murayama Oshima Tsumugi was a specialty. Since the 1960s, the number of automobile factories and housing complexes has increased, and urbanization has progressed. In March 2001, the Nissan Murayama Factory was closed, and part of the site was used to build the large-scale shopping center Diamond City Mu in November 2006. 15.32 km2 . Population: 70,053 (2010). 東京都中部の市。1970年市制。狭山丘陵の南麓にあり,武蔵七党の一つ村山党の発祥地。かつては養蚕と狭山茶の栽培を主とする農村で,村山大島紬(つむぎ)を特産した。1960年代から自動車工場や住宅団地などが増加し,都市化が進んだ。2001年3月,日産自動車村山工場が閉鎖し,跡地の一部を利用して2006年11月大規模ショッピングセンターダイヤモンドシティ・ミューが完成。15.32km2。7万53人(2010)。
