A snake god formed from the indigenous Indian snake belief. It is translated into Chinese as dragon. Nagas, or snakes, are said to live in an underworld called Pātāla. The world is ruled by the dragon kings Bhasuki and others. The dragon kings are huge, powerful, and highly venomous, with large umbrella-shaped swellings on their necks. The idea of a dragon king is probably derived from the shape of a king cobra. Nagas are said to be eaten by a legendary giant bird called Garuda. A clan of snakes that was about to be eaten by the Garuda bird was saved by the famous Shimutavahana in Indian literature. His story of self-sacrifice was dramatized in Nagananda (Joy of the Dragon King) by Harshavardhana (7th century), king of the Harusian dynasty. In Buddhism, dragons are considered one of the eight heavenly dragons and are considered demigods who protect the Buddhist teachings (→Eight Great Dragon Kings).
