…Shenda is thought to be a deification of a reed or a tiger, and Urui is thought to be a deification of a peach or thunder, but later they were thought of as exorcising deities. In later times, the two deities were transformed into Qin Qiong and Yuchi Jingde, who served Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty. In Journey to the West, when Emperor Taizong was harassed by the spirit of the Dragon King of Jinghe, who had been decapitated by Prime Minister Wei Zheng, Qin Qiong and Yuchi Jingde guarded the palace gates, but Emperor Taizong could not bear to see their hardships and had paintings of the two generals hang on the gates, and this story has been passed down among the people as the origin of the gate deity. …
