Japanese: 卯槌 - うづち
Uzuchi - Uzuchi
〘Noun〙 In the Middle Ages, a mallet was offered to the Imperial Palace by the Itodokoro (Thread Place) and Rokuefu (Edo Palace) on the first day of the Rabbit in the New Year to ward off evil spirits. It is a modified Uzujo (Uzu staff), usually made from peach wood, and is a rectangular prism three sun (about 10 cm) long and one sun (about 3 cm) wide on each side, with a vertical hole drilled into it from which 10 to 15 strands of braided thread of five colours hang about five shaku (about 1.5 m). There were also circular ones. In the Imperial Palace, it is hung on a pillar in the southwest corner of the Hi- no-Omasi (Day Throne) . It is a custom that imitates the Gobo (hard rabbit) of the Chinese Han dynasty, and was also practiced by the general public, and in the Edo period, such creations were sold at the first visit to the palace on the day of the Rabbit. [Season: New Year] *Makura (end of the 10th century) 87 "When the letter was read, two Uzujo (5-inch mallets) were wrapped around the head and other parts of the body in the shape of a Uzujo."
