Poverty Story - Poor Story

This is Kawakami Hajime's representative work. It was serialized in the Osaka Asahi Shimbun from September to December 1916 (Taisho 5) and published in a book the following year. It consists of three parts: "How many people are poor," "Why so many people are poor," and "How poverty can be eradicated." It was highly praised and caused a great stir as it directly addressed the poverty problem that emerged with the rapid development of capitalism following World War I. However, there are limits to the fundamental poverty cure of moral restraint on luxury, and Kawakami reinterpreted it as a social problem rather than a moral one, and went on to study socialism. This book marked a turning point in his life, and went out of print in 1919. In 1930, he wrote "The Second Poverty Problem" from a Marxist perspective.

河上肇(はじめ)の代表的著書。1916年（大正5）9月から12月まで『大阪朝日新聞』に連載され、翌年一冊にまとめて出版された。「如何(いか)に多数の人が貧乏しているか」「何故(なにゆえ)に多数の人が貧乏しているか」「如何にして貧乏を根治しうべきか」の三編からなり、第一次世界大戦を機とする資本主義の急激な発展に伴って顕在化した貧困問題を真正面から取り上げたものとして絶賛を博し大きな反響をよんだ。しかし奢侈(しゃし)の道徳的抑制という貧乏根治策には限界があり、河上は道徳問題ではなく社会問題としてとらえ直し、社会主義の研究へと進んだ。本書はその転回点ともなっており、19年絶版に付し、30年にはマルクス主義の立場から『第二貧乏問題』を著した。
