Two American inventor brothers who were pioneers of aviation. Born into a family of high-ranking clergymen in the Church of the Brethren, they showed a talent for machinery from an early age. They were interested in the glider flight of Otto Lilienthal of Germany, and aimed to realize powered flight, so they mainly studied the aerial control mechanism of airplanes. In the fall of 1902, they started to build the first airplane, which weighed 370 kg and had a 12 horsepower engine. The following year, on December 17, 1903, they flew it at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and succeeded in the first powered flight in human history. They continued to work on improving airplanes, and held spectacular public flights all over Europe. Wilbur founded the Wright Aeronautics Company, and Orville worked as a researcher, and both contributed to the development of American aviation technology. In Dayton, there is a U.S. Air Force research center named after Wright. (→Wright Flyer)

アメリカ合衆国の発明家兄弟で，航空の先駆者。同胞教会の高位聖職者の家に生まれ，幼年から機械類に優れた才能を発揮。ドイツのオットー・リリエンタールによるグライダーの飛行に興味をいだき，動力飛行の実現を目指して，おもに飛行機の空中制御機構の研究を進めた。 1902年秋から全重量 370kg，12馬力のエンジンを積んだ第1号機の製作にとりかかり，翌 1903年 12月 17日ノースカロライナ州キティホークでこれを飛ばし，人類初の動力飛行に成功した。その後も飛行機の改良に努め，ヨーロッパ各地で華々しい公開飛行を行なった。ウィルバーはライト航空会社を創立，オービルは研究者として，ともにアメリカ航空技術の発展に貢献。デートンにはライトの名を冠したアメリカ空軍の研究所がある。 (→ライト・フライヤー )
