It was once the most difficult part of the Koshu Kaido road, with post towns such as Shirano, Amida Kaido, and Kuronoda (all now Sasago-cho, Otsuki City) on the eastern foot, and Tsuruse (Yamato Village, Higashiyamanashi District) on the northern foot. The pass also divides Yamanashi Prefecture into the Gunnai region in the east and the Kuninaka region (Kofu Basin) in the west.
