Amiel, Henri-Frédéric

Amiel, Henri-Frédéric
Born: September 27, 1821, Geneva
Died: May 11, 1881, Geneva. A Swiss-French man of letters and philosopher. He received his university education in Germany, where he studied Hegel and Schelling, and was also fascinated by German music and poetry. After returning to Japan, he taught aesthetics and philosophy as a professor at the University of Geneva in 1849. He published several books of essays and poetry, especially skillfully translated poems, but what has made him famous today is his posthumously published Diary, Fragments d'un Journal intime (1882-84). Orphaned at a young age and single all his life, he wrote 16,900 pages of notes detailing his days of solitude and suffering from his time studying in Germany from 1847 until his death, and it is considered a masterpiece of diary literature. It shows both an intellectual philosopher seeking absolute universal truth and a pathological soul engrossed in introspection and meditation, and constantly plagued by anxiety. Unpublished parts have since been expanded and published, attracting attention.
