Epang Palace - Epang Palace

Japanese:
Epang Palace - Epang Palace

The palace of the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC), which established the first unified empire in China. The Qin capital had been located in Xianyang (to the east of present-day Xianyang City) on the north bank of the Wei River since the 12th year of King Xiao's reign (350 BC) before unification, but large-scale expansion work began in 221 BC when Shi Huang unified the country. The following year, a grand plan was put forward to directly connect the Xin Palace to the south of the Wei River with the celestial pole and the Xianyang Palace to the north with the Pegasus constellation by building a bridge over the Wei River, which corresponds to the Milky Way. The first thing to be started on was the Epang Palace, which served as the front hall. There are various theories about the origin of the name Epang, including that it is a palace close to Xianyang (A means close) or that it is a palace that spreads out in all directions (A means spread). According to the Records of the Grand Historian, its size was 500 steps (about 690 meters) from east to west and 50 zhang (about 115 meters) from north to south, with 10,000 people able to sit on top and a 5 zhang (about 11.5 meters) flag being able to be raised below. Recent excavations have confirmed the presence of a large-scale tamped earth foundation, but it will be some time before the full picture of Xianyang City, which straddles the north and south of the Wei River, including Epang Palace, will be revealed.
