A Japanese Jesuit priest from the Azuchi-Momoyama to early Edo period. He was commonly known as Fukansai Banian. The name Banian is a common spiritual name for Christians, and there were others who called themselves that. The most famous is Fukansai Banian, but his background is unclear. One theory is that he was born in Wakasa in 1565, became a Christian around 11th year of Tensho (83), joined the Society of Jesus in 14th year of the same year, studied at a seminary in Osaka and a college in Nagasaki, and became an Iruman (Iruman). He wrote the preface as the editor of the Amakusa version of the Romanized version of The Tale of the Heike in 1922, and later worked on adjusting the translation of the Christian version. He returned to Kyoto in 1603 and wrote Myozen Mondo, in which he preached Christian doctrine and criticized Shinto, Confucianism, and Buddhism. In the same year, he debated with Hayashi Razan, but shortly thereafter renounced his faith and in 1620 (Genna 6), he wrote "Hadaiusu" (Destruction of Christianity), in which he rejected Christianity.
