Komunmoru Ruins - Komunmoru Ruins (English spelling) Kŏmǔnmoru‐yujŏk
This limestone cave site is located on the southern slope of a hill in Komunmor (Heoksu-ri), Sangwon-gun, Pyongyang, Democratic People's Republic of Korea. It attracted attention in 1964 as the first example of stone tools and animal bone fossils found on the Korean Peninsula, and as a site corresponding to the Early Paleolithic period, and was excavated in 1966. The existing cave, which is about 30m wide and 2.5m deep, can be conveniently divided into four sections. A large number of animal bone fossils were excavated, along with quartz blocks of various sizes and several stone tools. The stone tools are made of siliceous limestone and quartz vein rock, and were made by the direct striking and footing techniques, and include hand axe-shaped, pointed, and chipped stone tools.
