Anglo‐Saxon Chronicle

The most important source on the political and military history of early medieval England. It records major events that occurred in each year from the year A.D. in Old English, but the most important part is the part from the middle of the 5th century onwards. The original was compiled in the late 9th century under King Alfred the Great using old traditions, records and historical books such as Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the Britons as materials, and was subsequently continued in several churches and monasteries. There are currently seven manuscripts (one of which has a Latin translation) and two fragments, of which the four that remain are closest to the original and are considered to have high historical value: the Parker Chronicle, the Abingdon Chronicle, the Worcester Chronicle and the Peterborough Chronicle.

イングランド中世前期の政治･軍事史に関する最も重要な史料。紀元元年から編年的に各年におこった主要事件を古英語で記しているが，史料的に重要なのは5世紀なかば以後の部分である。9世紀後半アルフレッド大王のもとで，古い伝承や記録またベーダの《イギリス人の教会史》などの歴史書を材料として編纂されたものが原本で，以後いくつかの教会･修道院で書きつがれた。大別して7種の写本(うち1種にはラテン語訳が付される)と2種の断片が現存するが，うち《パーカー年代記Parker Chronicle》《アビンドン年代記Abingdon Chronicle》《ウースター年代記Worcester Chronicle》《ピーターバラ年代記Peterborough Chronicle》の4種が原本に近く，史料的価値が高いといわれる。
