Opuntia; prickly pear
A general term for a group of cacti whose stems are fan-shaped and flattened into elliptical segments, some of which can reach several meters in height. There are about 300 species of the Opuntia genus, as well as several other genera, which are distributed mainly in Mexico, but there are also cold-tolerant species and the distribution is wider. One of these, O. tuna , is cultivated for its sweet and sour fruit, which is edible, and is also used as animal feed. It is generally cultivated as an ornamental plant.
