A small island located about 16 km south of Cape Terpeniya in the northeast of South Sakhalin. Its Russian name is Tyureniyi Island, also known as Loppen (Sea Gorgon) Island. In the Russian Federation, it belongs to Sakhalin Oblast. It is a table-shaped island of a raised sea platform, 700 meters long, 75 meters wide, and about 12 meters high, with a strip of gravel beach on the coast. It is world-famous as a breeding ground for fur seals, along with the Commandersky Islands (eastern Kamchatka Peninsula) of the Russian Federation and the Pribilof Islands (Bering Sea) of the United States. A harem of fur seals forms between late May and early October, where they give birth and raise their young before leaving for the south in autumn. Before World War II, the area belonged to the Shikika Branch Office of the Karafuto Prefecture, and as of the autumn of 1927 (Showa 2), there were recorded 28,000 fur seals, but the government managed to capture 1,000 to 2,000 seals per year.
