...In Japan before the Meiji period, there was a strong tendency for each genre of music to belong individually and closed to a social class; for example, gagaku belonged to temples and shrines and the nobility, Nohgaku to the samurai class, and Nagauta and Joruri to townspeople. According to Yoshikawa Eiji, the term "music" was brought from ancient China, but until the Nara period, even when the characters were borrowed to write, "ongaku" was not read as "utamahi" or "monone", etc. Then, from around the early Heian period, the word "ongaku" was used, but it mainly referred to instrumental ensembles of Tang music and Goryeo music. ...
