Utafu - Utafu

...Since the early modern period, there had been a conflict over fishing and hunting territories between the Ainu of the Shibuchari region on the Hidaka coast (part of the Menashikuru (Eastern people)) and the Ainu of the Hae (present-day Monbetsu Town) region (part of the Shumukuru (Western people)). In April 1668, this conflict escalated to the point where the chief of the Shibuchari Ainu, Shakushain, stabbed and killed the chief of the Hae Ainu, Onibishi. The Ainu on Onibishi's side requested assistance from the clan office with weapons, but the clan refused, and the messenger, Utaf, suddenly died of smallpox on the way home. The news of Utaf's death was conveyed to the Ainu as a case of poisoning by the Matsumae clan, and this false report triggered the conflict between the two groups to develop in a completely new direction.

…近世初頭以来日高沿岸部のシブチャリ地方のアイヌ(メナシクル(東の人の意)の一部)とハエ(現，門別町)地方のアイヌ(シュムクル(西の人の意)の一部)との漁猟圏をめぐる争いが続いていたが，1668年4月，ついにシブチャリ･アイヌの首長シャクシャインがハエ･アイヌの首長オニビシを刺殺するという事件に発展した。そのためオニビシ方のアイヌは藩庁に武器援助を要請したが，藩側に拒否されたうえ，使者のウタフが帰途疱瘡にかかり急死した。このウタフ死亡の報は，アイヌの人たちに松前藩による毒殺として伝えられ，この誤報を契機に両集団間の紛争はまったく新たな方向に発展した。…
