A collection of Tayama Katai's memoirs. Published by Hakubunkan in 1917 (Taisho 6). In 1911-12, as he turned 40, Katai's emotional turmoil became more intense, and at a time when he finally began to see signs of stability, he followed the example of A. Daudet's Thirty Years in Paris and looked back on the half of his life he had lived, attempting to see it as a historic point. Seen through Katai's eyes, the movement of the literary world and his interactions from the Meiji to the Taisho periods are developed with a focus on the rise and fall of naturalistic literature. Although there are some errors and misrememberings, this is a valuable document for learning about the transition from the Meiji to the Taisho periods, and is also interesting for learning about the modernizing scenery of the Meiji period.
