However, even if it is simply called Narasaka Pass, in the old days, there was the "Utahimegoe" road, which was the northward extension of the "Shimotsumichi" of the Yamato Kodo, and another road (along the JR Kansai Main Line) that was the northward extension of the "Nakamichi". After the capital was moved to Heijo-kyo, the "Utahimegoe" route fell out of use for a while, and the "Nakamichi" route and the current Narasaka (along the old National Route 24), which had long been called the "East Road", came to be used.

From Mount Nara

...A low hill about 100m above sea level that runs east to west on the border between the northern part of the Nara Basin and Kizu Town, Soraku County, Kyoto Prefecture. Narasakagoe in the east and Utahimegoe in the west were used as ancient transportation routes connecting Yamato and Yamashiro. There are many ancient tombs in this area, which was closely related to the Wani clan in ancient times, and the tombs of imperial family members and powerful aristocrats are also found here.
