A mammalian animal in the order Carnivora, family Felidae. A domesticated cat in the same family. Its ancestor was the African wildcat F. sylvestris lybica, which was domesticated by the ancient Egyptians around 1500-1300 BC. Originally kept to catch mice, today it is mainly kept as a pet, and there are about 30 varieties.
