A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family that grows in the shade of trees in mountainous areas (illustration). The name means a polar bear with leaves that resemble maples. Polar bear refers to the hair from a yak's tail, which is used to decorate flags, spears, helmets, etc. The way the flowers bloom is likened to a polar bear. The underground stems are 40-80cm long, and several long-stalked leaves grow in a slightly whorled pattern in the middle of the stem. The leaf blades are cordate and palmately shallowly to medially lobed. Flowering season is August to October. Numerous flower heads grow in spikes. The pappus is feathery. It is found from the Korean Peninsula to northern Kyushu (Tsushima), but in Honshu, species with shallowly lobed leaves are found, and are called Okumomijihaguma A. acerifolia var. subapoda Nakai.
