Utazawa Shibashii

...The name of the head of the Utazawa Shiba school (Kagazawa). (1) First Generation (1828-1874, Bunsei 11-Meiji 7). His real name was Shibata Kanekichi. He was the third son of Shibata Yasaburo, a vassal of Takasago-cho, Nihonbashi, Edo. He loved music from a young age and was nicknamed Shibakin. He was known for his sophisticated songs and skillful shamisen playing, and participated in the founding of Utazawa. After the death of Utazawa Sasamaru, he applied to establish the school, and in 1861 (Bunkyu 1), he received the name Tosa Tayu from the Saga Imperial Palace. He used the character "Kaga", which is just the radical of the character "uta", to distinguish him from the Tora school, and began his activities as a separate school under the name of the first Shibakin. In 1867 (Keio 3), he published a songbook in his style called "Matsu no Midori". ...
