This is the amount of precipitation assuming that all the moisture in the air falls as rain or snow. The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere varies considerably depending on the location and season, but on average on Earth, an air column with a cross-sectional area of 1 square centimeter contains about 3 grams of water vapor. This is equivalent to 30 millimeters of precipitation. The reason that the actual amount of precipitation is much greater than the amount of precipitable water is that moisture constantly evaporates from the Earth's surface, and moist air forms large-scale currents that carry water vapor one after another.
