The word horticulture is a translation of the English word horticulture, and was first used in Japan in an English-Japanese dictionary published in 1873. Horticulture comes from the Latin words hortus (meaning enclosure or enclosed land) and cultura (meaning cultivation), and has been used since the 17th century.
