Utazawa Sasamaru - Utazawa Sasamaru

Japanese:
Utazawa Sasamaru - Utazawa Sasamaru
Born in 1797. Edo
[Died] September 4, 1857. Founder of Edo Utazawa. Real name Sasamoto Hikotaro. Eldest son of Sasamoto Tadayoshi, a 500 koku vassal. In 1819, he inherited the family headship and was assigned to the Shofushin Goshoin. In 1840, he retired and took the name Sasamaru. He gathered townspeople and craftsmen who were fans of the hauta that was popular in Edo, and called it the Utazawa Ren. He added a dignified itchu-bushi style to hauta, creating a more refined and profound style of performance. In June 1857, he applied to the Saga Imperial Palace (Asakusa Shotencho branch office) and received the title of Utazawa Yamato Daijo Minamoto Tadakane. In July of the same year, he appointed tatami maker Hirata Toruemon (later Utazawa Sagami) as the second head of the school, but after Sasamaru's death, a vassal of the shogun, Shibata Kanekichi (later Kozawa Shibakin), who had a different artistic style, came into conflict with Toruemon, and he received permission from the Saga Imperial Palace to take the name Kozawa Tosatayu Fujiwara Masanao and become the first head of the Shiba school. On the other hand, Toruemon, the founder of the Tora school, appointed Sasamaru as the first head and himself as the second head of the Utazawa school.
