A general term for flatworms belonging to the Cestoda class. All species are parasitic and have the characteristic of not having a digestive tract at any stage of development. Adults of parasitic human species usually live in the human intestine, causing abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nutritional disorders. All of these are multi-segmented tapeworms, consisting of one scolex and several to several thousand proglottides, some of which can reach a total length of 10 meters. Some of these resemble Sanada-himo (a string made of Japanese dung bean paste), and so it is said that tapeworms began to be called tapeworms around the Edo period when this string came into common use.
