The chemical formula is H 2 S 2 O 4 . It was previously called hydrosulfurous acid or hyposulfurous acid, but the IUPAC nomenclature changed it to dithionous acid. It is also called dithionous acid. The free acid can be obtained by reacting sulfur dioxide with iron, zinc, or sodium amalgam in a closed vessel, but it is extremely unstable and decomposes into thiosulfuric acid, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide. Dithionites include salts of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, zinc, and cadmium. They can be obtained by suspending the metals in an organic solvent or water, or by passing them through sulfur dioxide as an amalgam. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
