Buffing - Buffing

A method of mechanical polishing. Also known as buffing. Abrasive powder solidified with fatty acids, hardened oils, mineral oils, etc. is applied to a rotating cloth disk, and the item is pressed against it to polish it. The purpose is to give a glossy finish. Commonly used abrasives include aobou (chromium oxide), shirakaba (calcined alumina), machiless (calcined dolomite), and akabou (iron oxide).

機械研摩の一方法。羽布(バフ)仕上げともいう。研摩粉を脂肪酸、硬化油、鉱油などで固めた油脂研摩材を、回転する布製の円板に塗り付けながら、品物をそれに押し付けて研摩するもので、目的はもっぱら光沢仕上げを与えることにある。研摩材として普通に用いられるものは、青棒(あおぼう)（酸化クロム）、白樺(しらかば)（焼成アルミナ）、マチレス（ドロマイト焼成物）および赤棒(あかぼう)（酸化鉄）などである。
