Tokugawa Musei

Actor and broadcast entertainer. His real name was Toshio Fukuhara. He was born in Shimane Prefecture. After graduating from Tokyo Prefectural First Middle School, he aspired to be a silent film narrator and apprenticed under Reizan Shimizu. He later served as the head narrator at Akasaka Aoikan and Shinjuku Musashinokan. After the appearance of talkies, he participated in the launch of "Kingdom of Laughter" and Bungakuza, and formed the Kurakuza with Sadao Maruyama and others. He was also active as an actor, appearing on NHK radio, breaking new ground in stand-up comedy and storytelling, and after World War II, he was well-known as a questioner on the radio show "Fountain of Stories." He also appeared in many films. He also appeared on television from the early days, hosting and conducting talk shows, demonstrating his versatility. He was also a talented writer, and wrote many books and essays. He received the first NHK Broadcasting Culture Award, the Kikuchi Kan Award, and the Medal with Purple Ribbon. He also served as the mayor of Meiji Village.

俳優、放送芸能家。本名福原駿雄(としお)。島根県生まれ。東京府立一中卒業後、活動写真の弁士（無声映画説明者）を志し清水霊山に弟子入り、のち赤坂葵(あおい)館、新宿武蔵野(むさしの)館の各主任弁士を務める。トーキー出現後は、「笑の王国」や文学座の旗揚げに参加、また丸山定夫らと苦楽座を結成するなど俳優として活躍する一方、NHKラジオに出演、漫談、物語などに独特の境地を開き、第二次世界大戦後はラジオの「話の泉」の解答者として親しまれた。映画出演も多い。テレビにも初期のころから出演、司会、対談など多芸多才ぶりを発揮した。文才にもたけ、著書、随筆も多い。第1回NHK放送文化賞、菊池寛賞、紫綬褒章(しじゅほうしょう)などを受賞。明治村の村長も務めた。
