Shin Yodogawa

A spillway for the downstream Yodo River that flows through the northern part of Osaka City. It branches off from the old main stream at Kema in Miyakojima Ward and flows into Osaka Bay in an almost straight line. After the great flood of 1885 (Meiji 18), this new river was excavated for flood control, with a total length of about 10 kilometers and a width of about 800 meters. Construction began with the excavation of the Nagara Canal in 1898 and was completed in 1910 (Meiji 43). The Kema araiseki weir allows only the necessary water to flow into the old main stream, protecting the city from flooding. Currently, in terms of river administration, the new Yodo River course is simply called the Yodo River, and the old main stream is called the old Yodo River.

大阪市の北部を流れる淀川下流の放水路。都島区(みやこじまく)毛馬(けま)で旧本流から分かれ、ほぼ直線状に大阪湾に注ぐ。1885年（明治18）の大洪水後、治水のため開削された全長約10キロメートル、幅員約800メートルの新川で、1898年長柄(ながら)運河掘削から着工、1910年（明治43）完成。毛馬の洗堰(あらいぜき)で旧本流に必要な水だけを流し、市街地を洪水から守る役目を果たす。現在は河川行政上、新淀川流路を単に淀川、旧本流を旧淀川とよぶ。
