Died January 21, 1609. Leiden. French classical scholar. Known for establishing the foundations of modern textual criticism and for his outstanding achievements in the revision and annotation of classics. Son of Italian French humanist JC Scaliger. Educated in Bordeaux, he went to Paris in 1559 to study Greek, Latin, and other languages. In 1562 he converted to Protestantism. He then studied classics at universities in France, Germany, and Italy. After the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in August 1572, he went to Geneva and taught philosophy there. He returned to France in 1674. He became a professor at Leiden University in 1593 and was considered one of the most outstanding scholars of his time. His major work was Opus de emendatione tempore (1853), On the Correction of the Calendar.

Died October 21, 1558. Aachen. An Italian-born humanist and natural scientist who was active mainly in France. His early career is unknown, but he was active in Aachen from 1525. He wrote a variety of works, combining his encyclopedic knowledge, especially of natural science, philosophy, and the classics, with critical insight. He is famous for his commentaries on the works of Hippocrates, Aristotle, Theophrastus, and others, but in the literary field he was influenced by Pomponazzi and wrote Poetice (1561), which was an influential work of literary criticism. He was the father of the classicist JJ Scaliger.

主としてフランスで活躍したイタリア出身の人文学者,自然科学者。初期の経歴は不詳だが,1525年からアーヘンで活躍。その百科全書的知識,特に自然科学,哲学,古典についての知識を批判的洞察力と結びつけて,さまざまな著作を著わした。ヒポクラテス,アリストテレス,テオフラストスなどの著作への注釈も有名であるが,文芸分野ではポンポナッツィの影響を受け,『創作論』 Poetice (1561) を著わす。これは文芸批評の書として影響を与えた。古典学者 J.J.スカリゲルの父。
