Sea bathing

...bathing on the beach for the purpose of escaping the summer heat or for recreation. The history of bathing in seawater is long, with records of Egyptians bathing in the Old Testament, but modern sea bathing began in the mid-18th century when British physician R. Russell preached the medical benefits of breathing the sea air, bathing in seawater, and drinking it, and gathered patients on the beach in Brighton to do so. After that, sea bathing gradually moved away from medical purposes and became popular as a leisure activity on beaches all over the country.
