Tupamaros

An urban guerrilla organization in Uruguay. Organized around 1963, it was initially active in rural areas, but gradually shifted its focus to urban guerrilla activities, kidnapping government officials, diplomats, and businessmen from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. It declined due to severe repression by the military, and was the catalyst for the establishment of military rule. Its name comes from Tupac Amaru, an 18th century Peruvian rebel.

ウルグアイの都市ゲリラ組織。1963年ごろ組織され，当初は農村で活動していたが，しだいに都市部でのゲリラ活動に重点を移し，1960年代後半から1970年代初めにかけ政府要人，外交官，実業家などの誘拐を行った。軍による厳しい弾圧を受け衰微。軍政が成立するきっかけになった。名称は18世紀ペルーの反乱者トゥパック・アマルーにちなむ。
