An urban guerrilla organization in Uruguay. Organized around 1963, it was initially active in rural areas, but gradually shifted its focus to urban guerrilla activities, kidnapping government officials, diplomats, and businessmen from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. It declined due to severe repression by the military, and was the catalyst for the establishment of military rule. Its name comes from Tupac Amaru, an 18th century Peruvian rebel. →Related article Uruguay Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
