Masajima Kengyo

Year of birth: Unknown. A jiuta shamysen player and kokyū player in Osaka in the mid-Edo period. His name was Jitsuichi. He studied under Fujinaga Kengyo and was initiated into the Nogawa-ryu shamysen in 1759. He became a kengyo in 1781. In 1771, he organized the Nogawa-ryu teaching books with fellow students Kamejima Kengyo and Kikunaga Kengyo. He composed "Kotobuki," "Sasayaki Take," "Soraibiki," "Tomari Fune," and "Wagami." His kokyū teacher was Shinagawa Kengyo. He put together a group of kokyū solo pieces and founded the Masajima-ryu kokyū style. His performances were said to bring tears to the eyes of listeners, and his son Yabei was also skilled at kokyū. He arranged "Yachiyojishi" from the shakuhachi into a kokyū piece. The tradition of the Masashima school of kokyū was spread to Edo by his disciple, Masafusa Morioka, and was recorded in the Sokyu Gaginshu (1811).

江戸中期の大坂の地歌三弦家,胡弓奏者。名を実一。藤永検校に師事し,宝暦9(1759)年に野川流三弦の伝授を受けた。13年検校になる。明和8(1771)年,同門の亀島検校,菊永検校と野川流の伝授書を整理した。「寿」「ささやき竹」「そらいびき」「泊り舟」「我が身」などを作曲。胡弓の師は品川検校。胡弓独奏曲の本手組をまとめ,政島流胡弓を創始した。聴く人の目を潤ませる名演といわれ,息子の弥兵衛も胡弓を得意とした。「八千代獅子」を尺八から胡弓曲に編曲。政島流胡弓の伝承は孫弟子の森岡正甫により江戸に広められ,『掃弓雅吟集』(1811)に記された。
