A large herbivorous animal with a hump on its back. A general term for mammals of the Camelus genus in the family Camelidae in the order Artiodactyla. There are two species: the two-humped Bactrian camel C. bactrianus (illustration) and the one-humped dromedary C. dromedarius (illustration). There are no wild species of dromedaries, and all are domesticated. A small number of Bactrian camels live wild in Mongolia and the Gobi Desert, but most are domesticated.
