Japanese: 書堂 - しょどう

A primary educational institution for Confucianism that developed and spread in Korea after the mid-Joseon Dynasty. As a private school with around 20 students taught by a single "instructor," education focused on reciting Chinese classics such as the Thousand Character Classic and calligraphy. It coexisted with school education even under Japanese rule, but disappeared after liberation except for Chinese classics schools for adults. In some villages, the instructor was highly respected, and memorial services are held every year to this day in front of a "learning monument" that praises his learning and virtue.

朝鮮で李朝中期以後に発達，普及した儒学の初等教化機関。20人内外の学童を一人の〈訓長〉が教える私塾として，《千字文》などの漢籍誦読，習字を主とする教育が行われた。日本統治下でも学校教育と並存していたが，解放後は成人用の漢文塾を除き消滅。訓長の村での信望は高く，その学徳を讃える〈学行碑〉の前で，現在に至るまで毎年追慕祭が行われている場合もある。
