A primary educational institution for Confucianism that developed and spread in Korea after the mid-Joseon Dynasty. As a private school with around 20 students taught by a single "instructor," education focused on reciting Chinese classics such as the Thousand Character Classic and calligraphy. It coexisted with school education even under Japanese rule, but disappeared after liberation except for Chinese classics schools for adults. In some villages, the instructor was highly respected, and memorial services are held every year to this day in front of a "learning monument" that praises his learning and virtue. → Related topics Confucianism Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
