...French photographer. Born in Normandy. He initially aspired to be a painter, but was inspired by the photographs of Man Ray and Atget, and began to take up photography seriously around 1930. In 1932, he held his first solo exhibition in New York. However, his snapshot-based photographs only received enthusiastic support from a small minority.
