Masuzo Ueno - Ueno Masuzo

Limnae biologist. Born in Osaka Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, Kyoto Imperial University in 1926 (Taisho 15). He worked at the Otsu Lakeside Laboratory, attached to the Faculty of Science, Kyoto University, where he served as its director until 1953 (Showa 28), when he transferred to the Faculty of Liberal Arts as a professor. He achieved many accomplishments in taxonomic research on freshwater arthropods such as branchiopods, amphipods, and tutelary shrimps, as well as stoneflies and mayflies, and in research on the planktonic biota of inland waters in East Asia, as well as their biogeography. He has written about 450 research papers and reports on the history of science, as well as many books, including An Introduction to Limnae Biology (1935), which is a pioneering commentary on inland waters and inland water organisms from the perspective of community ecology. He also had a deep knowledge of the history of science, and published works such as A History of Natural History in Japan (1973).

陸水生物学者。大阪府に生まれる。1926年（大正15）京都帝国大学理学部動物学科卒業。その後、1953年（昭和28）に教授として京都大学教養部に転出するまで、同理学部附属大津臨湖実験所に在職、所長を務める。淡水産節足動物の鰓脚(さいきゃく)類、端脚類、ムカシエビ類や、カワゲラ類、カゲロウ類の幼虫の分類学的研究、東アジアの陸水の浮遊生物相などの研究ならびにその生物地理学的研究で、多くの業績をあげる。研究論文および科学史などの報文が約450編のほか、著書も多く、『陸水生物学概論』（1935）は、陸水と陸水生物について群集生態学的観点からの解説書として先駆的意義をもつ。また、科学史についての造詣(ぞうけい)も深く、『日本博物学史』（1973）などがある。
